Research in Distributed Software Systems

As the reach of our society's digital backbone continues to extend, computing endpoints and intermediate nodes become increasingly involved in distributed applications. Developing such applications such that they are efficient, dependable, and secure is however far from being trivial.

Our research is thus broadly concerned with distributed software systems. This includes specific questions like how to implement certain kinds of applications efficiently and effectively, how to best leverage particular kinds of hardware, or how to make given applications dependable or secure. Taking a step back, we are also interested in shedding light on the fundamentals underlying such applications, such as programming models. Such a vantage point allows to distill the foundations of distribution per se, and to ultimately develop software solutions that may last beyond specific trends in applications or hardware.

Our research is currently mainly funded by the ERC Consolidator grant LiVeSoft: Lightweight Verification of (Distributed) Software


The DSP group has an open Ph.D. position starting immediately. 

The position is for work on "Application-centric privacy for big data analytics". Goal of this project is to enable efficient analytics of big data in a public cloud in a way preserving privacy of the data by taking into account precise information about data and operations performed on it.  

Knowledge in distributed systems security and ideally applied cryptography is expected. In addition, the ideal candidate has good oral and written communication skills and can work independently as well as in a team.
